In Congress, I’m committed to making sure seniors can live with dignity and security. That’s why I am working hard to lower health care costs and protect Social Security. During my first term in Congress, I helped pass the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) to lower the price of prescription drugs. Starting in 2025, the IRA will cap out-of-pocket costs for prescription drugs seniors at $2,000 per year. In addition, the IRA empowered Medicare to negotiate lower prices for 10 of the most expensive prescription drugs. Seniors will start to see those discounts in 2026. This will help 400,000 New Mexicans who rely on Medicare. I also believe that Social Security is an earned benefit that we must protect. That is why I am proud to support and strongly advocate Social Security 2100: A Sacred Trust. This legislation would increase benefits across the board for all Social Security beneficiaries, improve the Cost of Living Adjustment to reflect the inflation actually experienced by seniors, and end the 5-month waiting period to receive disability benefits. Social Security 2100 makes sure that no retiree experiences poverty after a full career of work by improving benefits for long-serving, low-wage workers.
