Education sets the foundation for our children who will become the next generation of leaders. We must make sure they have all of the necessary tools to be successful. As a Member of the Education and Workforce Committee, I am working hard to support students at every age. I began my lifelong love of learning as a Head Start baby and launched the bipartisan Head Start to Congress Caucus because I know the opportunities that early childhood education creates. To improve elementary and secondary schools, we need to invest in teachers and make sure schools have adequate resources. My Loan Forgiveness for Educators Act would help teachers pay back student loans. I also cosponsored the Advancing Toward Impact Aid Full Funding Act to increase funding for many public schools in New Mexico. I also want to make sure higher education is available to all students. My America’s College Promise Act would support tuition-free community college and invest in Hispanic Serving Institutions and Tribal Colleges and Universities. I also introduced the Campus Prevention and Recovery Services for Students Act to help colleges implement programs to help students who are struggling with addiction. Congress must also support young people who want to pursue trades or attend vocational school. That’s why I voted to pass the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), which would invest in workforce development programs. WIOA will provide apprenticeships for good high paying jobs in renewable energy, health care, the film and arts sector. I worked with my colleagues so these programs reach rural communities and bolster the creative economy. |
