Today, Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández, joined by City Councilor Chris Rivera and Regina Wheeler, City Public Works Director, visited and toured the Santa Fe Regional Airport. During the visit, the Congresswoman discussed the impact of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act on the airport’s local expansion, renovation, and five-year improvement plan. New Mexico’s 46 airports will receive $18 million in FY22 federal funding from the Infrastructure Law that Congress recently passed. Over the next seven years, New Mexico will receive $90 million. Specifically, the Santa Fe Municipal Airport will receive $1.6 million in FY22 funding. This funding is flexible and can be used to build and improve runways, taxiways, safety and sustainability projects, terminals, airport-transit connections, and roadway projects. “The Santa Fe Airport serves people from across northern New Mexico and is a key transportation hub for business, tourism and family travel. Patients are flown to urgent care, families reunited, and business meetings concluded because of this airport. The facility, first built in 1957, needs updating and the $1.6 million we announced today can help with the current phase 1 improvements, and subsequent phases. It can help pave the parking lot, increase the number of gates, and expand the footprint so we can accommodate an additional airline to serve our air travel needs. The plan keeps the unique and charming character of the airport while upgrading it to meet growing demand. Congress and President Biden understand the importance of investing in our infrastructure to help our economy grow for decades to come.” said Leger Fernández. “I am especially pleased that we included assistance for the smaller airports in my district - as each of these smaller airports serves the unique public health and economic needs of our rural residents.” The attached chart shows FY22 funding for airports in New Mexico’s 3rd Congressional district.
