Leger Fernández Slams Trump’s Move to Destroy Education; Calls on Republicans to Speak Out

“Trump and Musk’s destruction of the Department of Education is a disaster for families and students across the country.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Thursday March 20, Democratic Women’s Caucus Chair Teresa Leger Fernández (NM-03) released the below statement on the Trump Administration’s illegal Executive Order to dismantle the Department of Education:

“Trump and Musk’s destruction of the Department of Education is a disaster for families and students across the country, from preschool through graduation, in Republican and Democratic districts alike. When a family living in a rural area sends their kid who might have a disability to school, teachers who can help that child are paid with federal dollars. Schools without enough resources to hire enough teachers rely on federal funding to help decrease class size. When students who want to go to community college to become a nurse or a university to become a teacher can’t afford the tuition, they rely on federal Pell Grants and work study. When girls face discrimination or sexual harassment, the Department of Education is there to investigate under Title IX. All families know that education is essential for their kids to have the opportunities that America should promise everyone.

The billionaires running and ruining our federal government right now want to pull out the ladder of education opportunity from the students who need it the most. Trump’s destruction of public education is throwing families out of the American dream and into an American nightmare. All so he can give tax cuts to billionaires and privatize schools.

90% of our country’s students learn at public schools. Without federal support of these public schools, hundreds of thousands of teachers will be fired, causing class sizes to soar and reducing learning opportunities. Those teachers, 77% of whom are women, will lose the job they love.

The billionaire class that is running the Trump administration might not need public education, but our communities do.

The American public can find out how the schools in their state and congressional district will be hurt here. I also urge my Republican colleagues to take a look at how the schools in your district rely on the Department of Education and join us in denouncing this cruel and unconstitutional action. It’s time to stand up for the women and students in your communities.”
