Today, Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernández, visited the Amy Biehl Community School to make valentine’s day cards for veterans with first-grade students. During her visit, Leger Fernández spoke with teachers about her work to support educators and students across the third congressional district. On February 14, 2022, Leger Fernández will host her “Valentines for Veterans” program to encourage students, parents, and teachers across the district to show local veterans appreciation by making homemade Valentine’s Day cards. The Congresswoman will deliver the cards to New Mexico veterans. “It was so much fun to sit in the classroom with the students of Amy Biehl Community School crafting little pieces of kindness for our local veterans,” said Leger Fernández. “This Valentine’s Day, we will connect kids to vets and show our appreciation, gratitude, and support for their service in uniform.” Congresswoman Leger Fernández is a strong supporter of our veterans. In just one year, the House of Representatives has passed 29 bills to support veterans—and eight of those bills have been signed into law. This includes the American Rescue Plan, which delivered $17 billion in support to veterans. Rep. Leger Fernández introduced the Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor Congressional Gold Medal Act to bestow our nation’s highest civilian honor to the heroes - including many New Mexicans - who bravely defended Bataan and Corregidor. As a member of the Education and Labor Committee, Rep. Leger Fernández has worked to secure critical investments for schools, educators, and students. The American Rescue Plan, passed with support from the Congresswoman, sent over a billion dollars to invest in New Mexico’s schools, including to ensure schools could reopen safely during the pandemic. The Congresswoman has also cosponsored and led numerous bills including the Learning Recovery Act to ensure students have access to essential educational resources and do not fall behind in school. “Good education is the most powerful way to help a child become their best self and to build a thriving community at the same time. An investment in education is an investment in each individual student and in our state’s future. Now more than ever we must show teachers the respect they’ve earned and pay them what they deserve so that students in our district can thrive.” concluded Leger Fernández. ### |
