Congresswoman Leger Fernández Introduces Lowrider Resolution to Honor Vibrant Tradition

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernández introduced a resolution to celebrate National Lowrider Day on the first Saturday in May. The resolution recognizes lowriders, both the drivers and the cars, and their contributions to the cultural fabric of the United States.

Lowrider culture is a vibrant part of the historical and cultural fabric of the United States, with roots dating to post-World War II Mexican American and Chicano communities across the Southwest. Generations later, lowriders in New Mexico and across the entire country continue to share and cruise their beautiful creations down the road. This resolution celebrates lowrider culture and the strong pride, style, and community identity of lowriders.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service recently launched the “Corazón y vida: Lowriding Culture” exhibit and the traveling ‘‘Lowrider Culture in the United States/Cultura Lowrider en los Estados Unidos’” exhibit to share the history and stories of lowriders in the United States. The traveling exhibit will be on display in Farmington, New Mexico, for three months starting on April 25, 2026.

“Lowriders are more than cars — they are moving works of art, symbols of orgullo, and a celebration of community,” said Congresswoman Leger Fernández. “For generations, lowriders have cruised their works of art down the road in peace and style despite hostile discrimination. National Lowrider Day honors their creativity, resilience, and meaningful contributions to American culture and their communities. My bill recognizes this beautiful tradition that has uplifted families, inspired young people, and shaped art, music, and culture across our nation.”

The resolution is cosponsored by Representatives Norma Torres (D-CA-35), Laura Friedman D-CA-30, Lou Correa (D-CA-46), Luz Rivas (D-CA-29), Steven Horsford (D-NV-04) , and Melanie Stansbury (D-NM-01).
