July 22, 2021

WASHINGTON – Today,Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández announced she secured over $74 million for NM-03 through community project funding requests in appropriations legislation.

“This much-needed funding will impact communities all across my district. The $74 million will help fund broadband expansion projects, health care facility upgrades, mentoring and social programs for our children, water infrastructure for the Navajo Nation and Gallup area, and so much more.

“These investments will create a lasting impact in each community served for generations to come. I’ll always advocate so my district receives the federal funding we need to make our communities stronger. I look forward to the Senate reaffirming their commitment to community reflected in our appropriations bills.”

This year, the Appropriations Committee allowed each Member of Congress to request funding for up to 10 projects in their community for FY2022 and retained decision making authority to choose projects funded. The funding for the nine projects selected will be used to support the operations, maintenance, and continued development of community projects across northern New Mexico.

The over $74 million in funding includes:

  • Broadband for Española: $879,506
  • San Felipe Community Center: $1,500,000
  • Navajo-Gallup Water Supply Project: $67,342,000
  • Big Brothers, Big Sisters (BBBS) and Boys and Girls Clubs (BGC) mentoring services and social programs: $225,000
  • Roosevelt Special Hospital Expansion: $600,000
  • San Juan College Student for Health Center: $1,100,000
  • Broadband Expansion for the Curry County Fairgrounds: $250,000
  • Historic Taos County Courthouse: $1,263,973
  • Santa Fe Public Housing Re-Roofing Project: $1,044,172.80

"The Board of County Commissioners of Taos County is excited and honored at reaching this step in the appropriations process. We're so grateful to Congresswoman Leger Fernández for championing this meaningful project, which connects our Northern New Mexico community with our identity and our history," said Taos County Commission Chair Candyce O'Donnell.

“We are ecstatic that the City of Española’s broadband project has made it to legislative funding.  It is great to have Congresswoman Leger Fernández solidly backing critical infrastructure that improves connectivity our children, teleworkers, and citizens need to thrive,” said Española City Manager Xavier B. Martinez.

“Funding and related resources for capital reinvestment in the Public Housing Program are limited. We would like to thank Congresswoman Leger Fernández for her consideration and for providing this much needed funding. This large-scale capital investment in our Public Housing rentals and Boys & Girls Club facilities will help ensure that these assets remain available and accessible to members of our community for decades to come,” said Deputy Director of the Santa Fe County Housing Authority Joseph J. Barela.

“We at Big Brothers Big Sisters, are honored to have the support of Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernández's office in fighting the effects that the pandemic has had on our most vulnerable youth. Together we will address the inequities faced by children who are falling behind in school and are in need of a mentor or Big Brother/Sister and additional support to help them get back on track to reaching their biggest possible future,” said BBBS Mountain Region CEO David Sherman.
