Leger Fernández Meets with President Biden and Vice President Harris, Raises Issues of Greatest Impact to Latino Community

April 20, 2021

WASHINGTON — Today, Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernández, Freshman Representative for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, joined caucus leadership for a meeting with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to discuss the issues of greatest impact to Latino communities.

“It was an honor to meet with President Biden and Vice President Harris today to discuss the steps the administration can take to ensure that Latino communities across the country have equitable access to COVID relief and see the benefits of future investments in our nation’s housing, infrastructure, business development, education, and more.

“This pandemic has disproportionately affected Latino communities across the country which has increased already glaring health and wealth disparities. It’s vital that moving forward we are able to send help to the communities and businesses that need it most. To do this, we must follow the money. We must know that we are sending resources to those parts of the country that have the greatest need.  That is why we asked that President Biden establish an Equity Task Force within the American Jobs Plan to ensure that those investments reach every zip code, especially our most vulnerable Latino communities.

“To build back better, we must build back together and ensure that no community is left out of the progress we’re making. President Biden has a long and strong relationship with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and I have full faith in our path forward to ensure a better future for Latinos.”

During the meeting, Congresswoman Leger Fernández asked President Biden and Vice President Harris to make  the Child Tax Credit expansion permanent. This would lift and help keep 2 million Latino children out of poverty. During their conversation, Congresswoman Leger Fernández emphasized the importance of investing in what we believe and made the case that investments in the Child Tax Credit and childcare subsidies are investments in our children and investments in our future.
