As the first Latina to serve New Mexico’s third district, I recognize and celebrate the women, like Nina Otero Warren, upon whose shoulders we stand and the girls whose bright futures lie ahead. I trust women to make decisions about their bodies. The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade not only stripped away a woman's right to choose but ripped away our right to privacy in our bedrooms, marriages, and doctor’s offices. That’s why I cosponsored the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) so all women, regardless of zip code, have the freedom to make their own health care decisions. In addition, I cosponsored the Right to Contraception Act and Access to Family Building Act so women can access birth control options and IVF. As Vice Chair of the Democratic Women’s Caucus, I am also working to make sure that we provide economic security for women. I cosponsored the Child Care Stabilization Act to make sure child care providers continue to receive a reliable source of funding to help them deliver high-quality child care for working families. I introduced the Latina Equal Pay Day Resolution to call for equal pay for Latinas who currently only earn 51 cents for every dollar a white, non-Hispanic man makes. Our work to support women is far-reaching. I voted for the Violence Against Women Act to support programs that service survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. I helped pass legislation to improve how the military handles sexual assault. I cosponsored the Maternal Health Momnibus Act, which provides historic investments in maternal care, paid family and medical leave, and childcare. You can count on me to continue to work to support women across New Mexico. |
