Representative Teresa Leger Fernández today announced that the Rocky Mountain Youth Corps will receive a $907,184 grant from AmeriCorps, the federal agency for national service and community volunteerism. The grant will help Rocky Mountain Youth Corps have 161 AmeriCorps members working on a wide variety of land conservation projects in northern and central New Mexico. Serve New Mexico Commission, the state service commission, will also receive $1,505,568 in formula funding, which will in turn be awarded to New Mexico organizations to support additional AmeriCorps members in the coming months. “Land conservation is key to keeping our state beautiful and healthy. I’m proud to announce this funding for the Rocky Mountain Youth Corps so that they can continue their excellent work with our youth so future generations may enjoy our New Mexican lands and waters,” said Leger Fernández. AmeriCorps will provide an additional $404,697 in Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards for the AmeriCorps members funded by this grant. After completing a full term of service, AmeriCorps members receive an award of approximately $6,300 that they can use to pay for college or to pay off student loans. Congresswoman Leger Fernández voted for the recently passed American Rescue Plan, which included an additional $1 billion for AmeriCorps. The agency will use this investment to expand national service programs into new communities and increase the opportunity for all Americans to serve their country. ### |
