Congresswoman Leger Fernández Announces Key Roles and Appointments for the 119th Congress

Leger Fernández Takes on Key Leadership Roles: Ranking Member of Indian and Insular Affairs Subcommittee, Rules Committee Member, Deputy Whip for Policy, and Democratic Women’s Caucus Chair

Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernández (D-NM) was appointed to multiple powerful committees and leadership roles in the 119th Congress, reflecting her continued commitment to serve New Mexico and the nation with distinction.

Congresswoman Leger Fernández will serve as a Member of the influential House Natural Resources Committee, where she will serve as Ranking Member of the Indian and Insular Affairs Subcommittee. These positions allow her to champion critical issues affecting New Mexico's abundant natural resources, Tribal Nations, and public lands, continuing her advocacy for Indigenous peoples and environmental stewardship.

In addition, she will be one of only four democrats in the powerful House Rules Committee, where all major bills are heard before they go to the floor of the House. There, she will help shape the Congressional legislative agenda.

Reflecting her leadership within the Democratic Caucus, Minority Whip Katherine Clark has appointed Congresswoman Leger Fernández to serve as Deputy Whip for Policy, where she will work to advance Democratic priorities.

Congresswoman Leger Fernández was also elected Chair of the Democratic Women’s Caucus, which will include a record-breaking 96 Members in the 119th Congress. She succeeds Chair Emerita Lois Frankel, building on her legacy of bold and compassionate leadership.

“It is an honor to serve in these critical roles during such a pivotal time for our nation. As soon as Republicans took control of Washington, they showed us that billionaires come first at the expense of working families. Our work with the Democratic Caucus will be vital as we fight to lower costs and protect Americans from the worst Trump and his billionaire bros have in store. As Ranking Member of the Indian and Insular Affairs Subcommittee, a member of the Rules Committee, Deputy Whip for Policy, and Chair of the Democratic Women’s Caucus, I will work tirelessly to address the challenges our communities face. From protecting public lands to lowering costs to advancing women’s health care and achieving bipartisan wins, when possible, we are ready to deliver results for New Mexico and the American people,” said Congresswoman Leger Fernández.

Congresswoman Leger Fernández will serve in the following roles:

  • Member of the House Natural Resources Committee
    • Ranking Member of the Indian and Insular Affairs Subcommittee under the House Natural Resources Committee
  • Member of the House Rules Committee
  • Deputy Whip for Policy in the Democratic Caucus, appointed by Minority Whip Katherine Clark
  • Chair of the Democratic Women’s Caucus, representing a record-breaking 96 Members

As a champion for New Mexicans, Congresswoman Leger Fernández’s leadership roles position her to make an even greater impact in the 119th Congress.
