Congresswoman Leger Fernández issued the following statement in response to the House vote on the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act (H.R. 7024). The bill passed the House 357-70. “I will always stand for the children of New Mexico and do anything in my power to help them,” said Congresswoman Leger Fernández. “That is why, today, I voted for the bipartisan Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act (H.R. 7024), which extends a limited Child Tax Credit and could lift as many as 500,000 children out of poverty — even if it is a deeply flawed compromise.” “Unfortunately, even as corporate profits are near a record high of $3 trillion, Republicans insisted on including massive tax breaks to corporations in the final bill. In fact, for every dollar that children get in this bill, corporations are getting $5. These numbers reflect Republican priorities.” “In contrast, Democrats' American Rescue Plan lifted 4 million children out of poverty and cut hunger by more than 25% while being the largest tax cut for middle and working-class families in a generation.” “I look forward to regaining a Democratic Majority in the House so that when this bill expires, we can pass a child tax credit similar to what Democrats did in the last Congress — which provided a significantly higher tax credit for families, a monthly credit to families that requested it, and applied to every working and low-income family. We must help those who need it most, not multi-billion-dollar corporations,” she concluded. ###
