Rep. Leger Fernández Statement on GOP Efforts to Overturn Presidential Election
In reaction to the Republican-led effort to overturn the presidential election results, Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández (NM-03) released the following statement:
“President Trump lost at the ballot box, he and his loyalists enablers lost more than 60 baseless lawsuits challenging the election, and today they will lose again.
“On Sunday, I took an oath to uphold the Constitution – Republican Members of Congress stood alongside me and repeated those same sacred words. Today, I will walk into the chamber to uphold the will of the people and vote to certify President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’ historic win. Some Republicans will shamelessly seek to use their office to erase an election involving nearly 160 million American voters – trampling our Constitution on the way. Our democracy, while attacked by Trump and these Republicans, is resilient. Democracy will win today. “
“We will certify this election. And then? Then we will get to work to create opportunities while we focus on defeating the multiple crises that threaten our future. With a Democratic Senate we will defeat the pandemic, fix our economy, address our climate crises and pass H.R. 1 – Protecting Our Elections For The People.
