September 1, 2021

SANTA FE – Today, Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernández kicked off her Agua es Vida (Water is Life) Tour to put a spotlight on the impact climate change is having on the state and the innovative work being done to preserve our water resources. She met with the Rio Chama Acequia Association and toured the Santa Cruz Farm and Greenhouses.

“Our beautiful state is no stranger to the damaging impact of rising temperatures, wildfires, and drought. Today, local farmers and acequia leaders shared their innovative  work trying to conserve our precious water, while maintaining a 400 year old tradition of farming off of acequias,” said Leger Fernández. “While our communities are doing all they can to battle the effects of the drought and changing climate, they cannot do it alone. We also heard how training the next generation of farmers benefits the health of the land and our communities when we can eat local, organic delicious food. I will take the needs of these local innovators, entrepreneurs, and farmers back to D.C..”

The Agua es Vida tour will continue next week with additional stops in the district. Just this month, the UN released a report raising the alarm that continued inaction on the climate crisis has already led to irreversible global environmental impacts affecting the Southwest.
