ICYMI: Rep. Leger Fernández Speaks in Favor of Democracy Reform

March 4, 2021

WASHINGTON – Yesterday, Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernández spoke on the House steps in favor of H.R. 1, the For the People Act, saying voting should be a celebration rather than an endurance event where voters have to wait hours just to access the ballot box. She highlighted that the right to vote is an essential step to making progress on the issues that American support.

The House passed H.R. 1 last night by a vote of 220-210.

Remarks:

Americans across the country, no matter their political affiliation, they just want a democracy that works. A democracy that values and empowers them.

We should strive to be an example of democracy across the world. And that’s exactly what the For The People Act will do.

Voting should be a celebration, not an endurance event where Black, Latino and Native American voters need to wait 6 to 10 hours just to vote.

Increased voter participation should be all of our goals, Republicans and Democrats because anything less is a violation of our democratic ideal.

We must pass the For the People Act, because, yes we heard it, democracy is where we start to inspire us to work on the issues that the people overwhelming support like climate change, like lowering the cost of health care, and like building an inclusive society.
